When Sarah and I first met, I had just joined a new gym. Right before our 5 a.m. session kicked off, the trainer asked me to introduce myself. As soon as I mentioned that I’m a professional organizer, Sarah’s face lit up from across the room. She called out, “Ooh, I need your information!” Her enthusiasm caught me off guard in the best way, and I couldn’t help but laugh as I promised to share my contact details with her after class.*
On our first call, I realized Sarah wasn’t just another client. She’s a mom, a wife, and a powerhouse woman balancing so much at once. But even with all her multitasking superpowers, her closet had turned into more than just a cluttered mess, it was draining her energy, stealing her time, and chipping away at her mental well-being. She felt completely overwhelmed, unsure where to start, and too busy to tackle it alone. Still, she knew she needed a fresh start — fast. That’s where we came in.
The Problem
When I first stepped into Sarah’s closet, three things immediately stood out:
- There was no structure
- She had far too many clothes for the space available
- None of her hangers matched
Most of us know how much structure shapes our everyday lives. It helps us manage challenges, reach our goals, and stay grounded. The same principle applies to our closets. Structure is your blueprint. When you know what belongs in a space and exactly where it goes, you’re more likely to keep it tidy even when life gets busy. And when things do get messy (because life happens!), a good system makes it easy to reset. The real problem comes when there’s no plan at all. Without it, the thought of organizing later can feel so overwhelming that we avoid it altogether.
Did you know you’re far more likely to return an item to its rightful place when you actually know where that place is? And if you still struggle to put things back, it might be time to find a better home for that item. Its current spot may not work with the natural flow of your day-to-day life — making tidiness feel impossible to maintain.

The Solution
First, we created a clear structure for what belonged in Sarah’s closet based on how often items were used and where they made the most sense to live. Children’s clothes went back to the kids’ bedrooms. Linens found a home in the linen closet. Office supplies returned to the office. Traditional garments were carefully stored in a spare closet. Sarah also chose to donate a few things they no longer needed, keeping only what truly served her family’s daily life.
Next, we swapped out the mismatched hangers for matching black velvet ones to give the closet a polished, uniform look. For her husband’s suits, we added sturdy wooden wide-shoulder hangers to protect the fabric and maintain their shape. We briefly discussed redesigning the entire closet for maximum storage, but Sarah felt it could wait for another time.
Results
When I opened the finished closet for the big reveal, Sarah could hardly believe her eyes. Her whole family gathered to see the transformation and the joy on their faces said it all. While it might not be obvious in the photos, we also labeled the shelves by clothing category and organized each section by type, color, and sleeve length. Sarah had asked for a fresh start, and I’m so grateful we were able to give her exactly that.
